While beer has long played a central role in the advancement of modern civilization, ironically, today’s modern craft breweries often still struggle to innovate when it comes to managing their own internal processes.
Sure, huge leaps have been made in hop varietal development and in the realm of brewing processes, but everyday tasks like human resources management, recruitment and hiring practices, and payroll management are often overlooked and become internal bottlenecks.
Luckily, our friends at the Payroll Department have become a proven resource for breweries by prioritizing the human element first, while also keeping up with the advanced technological support needed to keep up in today’s market.
While many big-box HR and payroll firms might work for other industries, craft breweries often deal with different challenges. The Payroll Dept.’s ability to provide a personal touch to emerging businesses has helped the upstart company grow to over 20 employees servicing 900 clients and over 20,000 employees, while still remaining firmly planted and invested in their local Colorado community.
We recently spoke with Sean Kynor, current Controller for Station 26 Brewing, who previously served in the same role for Dry Dock Brewing to hear how The Payroll Dept has been able to support both mid-sized breweries in addition to their first brewery client, SKA Brewing.
How has the Payroll Dept helped your organization with hiring new employees from background checks to the seamless transition from interviewing to onboarding?
“I moved over to Two Six Distributing in January, and because I work remotely from Durango, I knew I wanted to bring on some external support to help with the onboarding process for our new employees. Luckily, The Payroll Dept. was able to help support those needs while also providing that high-quality level of service at a lower cost than our previous vendor. It’s also an added bonus that they can help cover our payroll needs as well.”
What does the onboarding process look like when working with The Payroll Dept.?
“It’s such a seamless process. Their portal is fully connected beginning with the recruitment and interviewing process so on-boarding takes little to no time at all. They’re able to collect all info including I9, W4, and basic employee info forms while also allowing new employees to acknowledge that they’ve received their employee handbooks once hired.”
Tell us about your experience with utilizing The Payroll Dept. to help support Dry Dock’s payroll needs in your previous role.
When I was at Dry Dock we had issues with mistakes from a previous vendor. When we’d try to call them (the previous vendor) you would never get the same person and customer service wasn’t that great. So we knew we needed to look into identifying a new payroll company. I’m part of a craft beer accounting group on Google, so I posted in the forum asking for recommendations. Most responses were similar, noting that their payroll providers were only mediocre and always fell short in one area or another, however, one person who was controller at SKA replied that they used The Payroll Dept. and absolutely LOVED working with them.
We ended up working with The Payroll Dept. for 6 years while I was at Dry Dock. They provided tremendous personalized customer service. They all know who you are and they know the issues and how to fix them quickly. While payroll issues are bound to arise in any organization, The Payroll Dept. was able to assist with corrections quickly and efficiently, which helped us save a ton of time.
Are you able to share an example of how The Payroll Dept. was able to help quickly rectify a payroll issue?
We had an employee who was supposed to be paid every Friday, but one Friday, he noticed that he didn’t get paid. I reached out and Vanessa at The Payroll Dept. who was able to quickly identify and fix the issue so our employee could get paid that same day. By Monday morning she was able to determine that it was a one-time issue and fix it so that it wouldn’t impact our employees moving forward. Her attention to detail helped to save time and frustration and ensure that our employees wouldn’t be impacted by any loss of pay.
How impactful is it that The Payroll Dept has had experience in working with other breweries?
When we switched to The Payroll Dept. they were already working with a few other brewery clients, so it was incredibly helpful for them to already understand the business model, understand how to deal with tips, and part-time employees. Having worked with SKA and Dry Dock already, who are both regional breweries helps with prior expertise in this industry.
